Gale Journal Alerts & Publication Pages

Hi,

Did you know that you can set up journal alerts for periodicals available in the Gale databases? After setting up a journal alert for a specific periodical, you will receive an email or RSS feed notification when Gale adds new content from that publication. At the very bottom of this email, there is an example of an alert I received for the AASL journal, Knowledge Quest. The alert email includes a preview list of 5 linked articles plus a link to all of the articles for the periodical, starting with the most recent.

To set up an alert, start from Gale PowerSearch and then follow the directions in the Gale tip sheet, How to Create Journal Alerts. The tip sheet recommends choosing “daily” for the frequency. However, if it’s a monthly publication, I recommend choosing “monthly.” Also, be sure that the publication you are interested in has current full-text coverage. Otherwise, there’s no point in setting up a journal alert. :-)

School staff and possibly older students may be interested in this option. For example, a high school social studies teacher may want to get The Economist in his or her inbox. Or, an upper elementary or middle school teacher may want to subscribe to Muse, an arts and science magazine, for articles to use in instruction. Or, maybe an English language arts teacher wants his teen students to subscribe to Cicada, a literary arts magazine. Or, perhaps you want to get alerts for Teacher Librarian as a way to stay current about best practicesYou get the idea.

Once you are on the About This Publication page, you’ll notice that you can quickly access content by specific publication issue or browse by year. For example, if you want to review the Knowledge Quest issue that was focused on copyright, and you know it was published in November 2016, you can change the Year drop-down menu to 2016 and then click on November.

FYI, there’s also a tip sheet called How to Create Search Alerts

Thanks,
Jen
