Gale: New Oregon Support Site & New NGK MARC Records

November 3, 2020

Hi,

Did you know that besides the national Gale support site, there’s one specifically for Oregon library staff? And, thanks to Tony Bottrell at Gale, the Oregon support site has a new look and refreshed content.

With that in mind, I’d like to highlight four pages on the Oregon support site:

    • K-12 Resources – This page provides basic information about K-12 access to the databases for new school library staff. You might be interested in the Gale K-12 flyer linked on the page. That same flyer is linked at the bottom of the Elementary Educator and Secondary Educator Find Information pages on OSLIS.
    • MARC Records – From here, you can download MARC records for ebook titles available in two Gale databases: Gale eBooks and National Geographic Kids (NGK). Adding the records to your catalog can provide additional discovery and access points. FYI, Gale staff added MARC records for 15 new NGK titles in August. For Follett Destiny users, there are directions about how to upload Gale MARC records to your catalog. Thanks to Miranda Doyle for verifying that the directions are still correct.
    • Authentication & Access – The top section on the page is about registering IP addresses so that users will not be prompted to log in when accessing the Gale databases while on campus. Even though most of your schools are doing distance learning, that will eventually change. Therefore, I encourage you to register your school or district’s external static IP addresses. You can fill out the easy form on the support site or send your IP addresses to me, and I’ll send them to Gale staff.
    • Gale Support – This page highlights some of the helpful resources available on the national Gale support site. The information about product pages is especially relevant during distance learning. Basically, a product page collects marketing and training materials for a specific database in one location, so it’s easy to find any lesson plans, resource guides, tip sheets, video tutorials, etc.

Please ask if you have questions about the support site or the K-12 Gale databases, or if you need your private school’s or school district’s Gale username.

Thanks,
Jen
